While it is now a common act of kindness to remember our mother's with flowers on this special day, Mother's day began as a commitement to peace after the devestation of the Civil War
Julia Ward Howe's is probably most famous for her poem, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
but she also wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation and wanted women to come together across national lines, to recognize what we hold in common above what divides us, and commit to finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
The holiday was declared officially by states beginning in 1912. Woodrow Wilson, declared the first national Mother's Day in 1914. |
