2009 HAWAII HEALING GARDEN FESTIVAL & Solstice Celebration: HAWAI"I - BIG ISLAND December 20th

The annual Hawaii Healing Garden Statewide Festival is a moveable feast, traveling across the state to Kauai, Oahu, Maui & Big Island, presented by Hawaii Health Guide and Sponsored by Hawaii Tourism Authority, Festivals of Hawaii, Hawaii County, Go Airlines, Bishop Museum and many others.

The final festival of 2009 will be celebrated on Hawai'i Big Island  Sunday, December 20 at Bishop Museum's  Amy Greenwell Ethno-Botanical Garden in Captain Cook - Kailua Kona. The Festival is held in conjunction with the Sunday South Kona Green Market.

Highlights of the Big Island Festival: include a special holiday concert with Millicent Cummings, an edible and medicinal lei and holiday wreath making contest with great prizes, cooking demonstrations  with Garden Fairy chef Dodi-licous that include healthy local holiday savory condiments such as go jin-gi cranberry chutney and raw chocolate mac nut mousse.  Learn helpful VOG remedies with Chinese medicine or essential oils, or discover the benefits of armotherapy from plants collected on the big island. Habitats Hawaii will showcase an interactive alternative housing display. Martial Arts Professor Steve McLaughlin 8th Dan from Hawaii Zenyo JuJutsu Kai will demonstrate some domestic safety and travel tips. Stop in at over 40 booths to find hand made crafts and gifts from the garden, delicious food, or community activities like "Grow your own Pesto", a hands on interactive kids gardening pilot project,

Preceeding the festival, a special one day "Traditions of Hawaiian Healing" lomi-lomi workshop will be held on Saturday, December 19th with presenter Kumu Alva Andrews from 10:00-3:00 for $100. Pre-register with 'Olu (808) 397-1253. Kumu Alva will also be featured at Sunday's Festival, with a free one hour presentation, both workshop and festival presentation will be held at Amy Greenwell Botanical Garden.

The Hawaii Healing Garden Festival celebrates Healthy & Green sustainable living by spotlighting the many multi-cultural traditional uses of medicinal and nutritional plants in personal health and healing, as well as environmental topics such as the benefits of organic foods & farming, home garden pharmacies, sustainability, permaculture, edible landscapes. The festival welcomes both residents and visitors to refresh themselves, teach, learn, enjoy and appreciate Hawaii's unique multi-cultural treasure of health traditions.

Gaining an outstanding reputation not just for being fun, but for  bringing to the public an outstanding roster of respected kumu's, teachers, elders, health practitioners and doctors sharing the plant medicines  and cultural traditions of Hawaii, Polynesia, India, Amazon & South America, Native America, Philippines, Japan, Okinawa  and China. The presentations, as well as activities, lectures, food demos, entertainment, music, dance and contests, are free to the public. Donations are welcomed. In the summer, fall and winter of 2009 each major island hosts a Festival celebration day of educational and cultural presentations, a health fair, healthy organic food, and entertainment.  Eco Fashion shows, SlamPoetry with Kealoha,  Eco- comedy and Improv, Healthy Tennis by Hawaiian Isles Tennis, Wild & Wormy composting, Hawaiian Traditions of Healing with Kumu Alva Andrews, Hawaiian Music with Kaleo Phillips, original folk rock with Brian Von Awesome and friends, local and international  dance,  cultural entertainment, games and contests, organic food, Kauai and Oahu also enjoyed a local beer and spirit garden including Honey Mead Wine and Sake.

The festivals are family friendly events, with programs for adults and kids alike. The days following each festival feature hands on workshops, organic farm tours, cooking classes and botanical adventures at unique locations around each island.  Workshops and cooking classes and tours are separate registration ranging from $10-$45.

Businesses, organizations and non-profits are invited to promote their products and services via the Hawaii Guide Expo exhibitor booths. Special discounts for Hawaii Health Guide advertisers and Big Island Health & Wellness association members. The community is invited to participate and support the event through program presentations, workshop collaborations, volunteer support, in-kind contributions and tax deductible donations and sponsorship funding of the statewide festivals and each islands unique event programs.

The Hawaii Healing Garden Festivals are presented by Hawaii Health Guide and supported by: the Forward Foundation, the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, The Counties of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawai'i, and other businesses and individuals. The Festivals will be in their 6th year, and 4th year statewide in 2010.
